I recently went on a photo excursion in search of wild horses. I went with Kevin McCormick, who in addition to being a fine photographer is very knowledgeable about wildlife and these horses in particular. They are known to range in an area north of Canmore and east of the Rockies, along Highway 40. The following map shows the general area. I took 79 photos in the area shown as “79”on the map and another 347 further north along Highway 40. This road is also known as a Forestry Trunk Road, not exactly a superhighway but easily negotiated with a four wheel drive vehicle or a truck. The area can be described as remote.

My first photograph shows two mares grazing with two foals in tow. My favourite for the day.

The animals were quite relaxed and seemingly familiar with human visitors. I’m certain this was not the first time they had been photographed. This trio was very obliging, although there may have been other agendas at play here. Two males showing an interest in the palomino filly.

Just to keep things interesting, a young stallion released a burst of activity which satisfied our want of some action. It also seemed to irritate some of the other horses and was quickly subdued. Drat!

Back to the obliging trio, they continued to amuse. The two males are sharing a joke (not polite) or perhaps negotiating courtship rights.

It was a great day and an equally good experience. I hope you enjoy this sampling of the many pictures I took.
